Biography

John was the oldest of seven children in the family of Manus and Catherine O'Grady McCormick, likely born the family farm in Peel Township, Wellington County. In 1861, John's father was the Macton hotelkeeper and farming on his family plot.[1] John's father died when he was 16, which likely added to his responsibilities on the farm.[2]

John was farming with his mother and siblings in 1891.[3] In 1897, John purchased a six-acre piece of land where the Macton Hotel stood, the hotel his father had previously managed.[4] A year later, he married Regina Kraemer in St. Joseph's Church in Macton when he was 37 years old.[5]

He was named postmaster in 1900, the post both his father and mother had held.[6][7][8]

John died of valvular heart disease at age 41,[9] leaving his widow and three small children. He is buried in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Macton, Ontario.[10][11]
