James Haden McCoy was born on March 1849 on Pond Creek in Pike County, Kentucky, United States, to Randolph McCoy Sr. and Sarah "Sally" (McCoy) McCoy. He went by the nickname "Jim".

He married Malissa Smith on 20 Feb 1873 in Pike County, Kentucky, United States[1] and their children include (not complete):

  1. Edna (McCoy) Gilliam (1875-1941)
  2. Lenna (McCoy) Weddington (1877-1963)
  3. Charlie McCoy (1896-1913)

He worked as a Peace Officer.

He survived many battles between the Hatfields and McCoys.[2]

Jim died of stomach and liver cancer on 30 Aug 1929 in Pike County, Kentucky, USA [3] and was buried at Catlettsburg Cemetery, Catlettsburg, Boyd County, Kentucky, USA. [4]
