James was the son of James McCreight, of Walkinshaw's Grove, near Tandragee, and Mary Chambers, daughter and heiress of John Chambers, of Dublin.
He was educated by Mr Hamilton and entered Trinity College Dublin on 4 July 1808, aged 16. His father was deceased when he entered T.C.D. B.A. 1813, M.A. November 1832. [1]
Curate Seapatrick 1817; Curate Killeavy 1823; Perpetual Curate Caledon 1825-35, Rector of Keady, co. Armagh Sept-Oct 1835.
James married Elizabeth Foster, daughter of William Foster, D.D., Bishop of Clogher in 1818. [2]

- By special licence on Sunday last at Cullen, the seat of the Right Hon. John Foster, the Rev. James M’Creight, of Seapatrick, in the County of Down, to Elizabeth Letitia, fourth daughter of the late Lord Bishop of Clogher, and sister of John Leslie Foster, Esq. of this City,
