James was the son of James McCreight, of Walkinshaw's Grove, near Tandragee, and Mary Chambers, daughter and heiress of John Chambers, of Dublin.
He was educated by Mr Hamilton and entered Trinity College Dublin on 4 July 1808, aged 16. His father was deceased when he entered T.C.D. B.A. 1813, M.A. November 1832. [1]

James married Elizabeth Foster, daughter of William Foster, D.D., Bishop of Clogher in 1818. [2]
