Biography

Eda was the 1st wife of Josiah Marcum, married about 1778. He was a veteran of the American Revolution.

Joseph married again to Polly Belcher in 1816.

Dates for the children overlap between the two wives and marriage dates, so it is not sure if Polly brought children with her from a previous marriage or if invalid children/dates have been added. With Polly born 1763, she would have been 53 at time of marriage to Josiah and that seems old to have several children with him.

Looking at member Ancestry trees, many of them have multiple children born the same year so it appears that people have been linking children to these two couples without any documentation and is at the point of knowing who belongs or not is unclear.

Research Notes

"Although there are many Ancestor Member Trees on Ancestry.com that list her parents as Jared McDonald b. est 1740 and [Elizabeth] Eleanor Atkinson b. 1747, there is no proof/documentation for that and conflicts with known data. Eleanor was only 13 years old in 1760 when Eda was born. Jared and Eleanor are thought to have married about 1765. They were in Maryland in 1766 for the baptism of their eldest child, John, and later raised their family of 11 children in Fauquier Co, Virginia, about 350 miles away from Cabell County, where Eda is shown as born and raised."

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Eda by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Eda:

If it helps to put an end to the Jared McDonald/Eleanor Atkinson issue or adds more weight to what I agree with you is the correct answer (she was not their daughter) - there are dna tests from known descendants of Eda Mae and Jared/Eleanor and there is are no matches. Just for fun I ran the Gedcom compare on a number of them and none of them showed any relationship.

I found a bit of additional info on Eda Mae (sadly nothing that establishes parentage).

"11. Josiah lived in Montgomery Co, VA from 1786-1789. A court case on 29 Mar 1786 Montgomery Co, VA, of Markham vs. Farler. Another court case Montgomery Co VA, a common law situation with Henry McDonald and Josiah Markum. On 1788 and 1789 Tax rolls, Josiah is seen to be residing in Montgomery Co, VA."

I have spent hours googling around this and found nothing else. Has anyone had better luck or will Eda Mae's real parentage remain a mystery?

McDONALD-2361 and McDonald-7194 appear to represent the same person because: HI Joe,

as previously discussed, I am working on merging several individual from this family and correct the family relationships
