Miles was born in 1786 in County Wexford, Ireland. His parents were Moses McDaniel and Poll McDaniel (born Doyle). He came to Newfoundland first, and then Port Hood where he married Rebecca Smith, daughter of Captain David Smith in 1811. Later he came to Northwest Margaree after living for a short time in Margaree Harbour. He purchased lands previously taken up by William Ross, one of the four pioneer Ross brothers. He had four sons and seven daughters.

Buried Miles died in 1856. He is buried in St Patrick's Cemetery, NE Margaree, Inverness County, Nova Scotia, Canada.
