One reason for the name change from McDonald to McDaniel; is my great grandfather told us the name was changed from McDonald to McDaniel. He did not know the reason why. My 3rd great grandfather at age 95 in his Rev. War pension record was asked " why the name change". His reply was "I got tired of correcting people and answered to whatever they called me". Sounds like the McDaniels I knew growing up. Secondly; there are court records in Orange CO NC that show some of the family went to court to change the name back to McDonald. James McDonald/McDaniel, son of Eli, is buried in Bloomingdale CM, Parke CO IL as James McDonald as is his children. These reasons are good enough for me and prove to be true.

Why do we think that he was born McDonald but changed his name to McDaniel?
