The first record of Hugh's family is that they sailed from Ireland in 1793 to join family that had settled in South Carolina. The ship that they were sailing in was captured by a French privateer, and all their belongings including the family Bible with all of their records were taken. They landed at Baltimore, then from there made their way to Lycoming County, Pennsylvania (later designated as Wayne Township, Crawford County).
