Jane is mentioned in her father's will. Unto my two daughters Mary and Jean each of them the like sum of twentysix pounds thriteen shills. and four pence like current money.[2] In 1742, Thomas McDowell, well-to-do merchant of Prince William County (later Loudoun County), VA died leaving a pregnant wife and four daughters. He left equal amounts to each of his daughters, and an equal amount to his unborn child.[3] .

I give and bequeath to my daughter Jane McDowell, all the tract of land laying on the north side of Kitocton Mountain containing 200 acres more or less, I give to her and her heirs forever. Mary McDowell's will[4] Her will also documents her six daughters and her marriage to Alexander Jennings after the death of her first husband Thomas McDowell.

I was adding documentation for Thomas McDowell and his wife Mary (Davis-Varnor) McDowell, today, and when I was adding their daughters, your Jane McDowell (married to John Dodd) profile showed up. The will transcript shows her name as Jean. I have also seen it as Jane.
