tradition says it was for 'Ferdinand'! The death certificate of his son
Terence (Ted), however, gives Ted's full name as Terrence Francis McElroy, Jr.
Francis is probably the correct name.
BIRTH: Date recorded in the parish register of Lower Creggan Roman Catholic
parish. Baptismal Sponsors: Mick Manus and Catherine McKee.
The township is CamlyMcCollough (various spellings). In 1900 census, birth
date is given as Aug. 1859.
DEATH: Kentucky Certificate of Death, File No. 5403, Reg. No. 22.
(or 25?--not clear). Informant--wife Bridget.
CAUSE OF DEATH: Chronic nephritis(duration 2 years); Contributory cause:
Hemiplegia, 6 years.
EMIGRATION: Arrived in the U.S. in 1877, according to 1910 census (see below) after his brother John
Both brothers were recorded in the census as boarding in
the home of Richard Garland ( a cousin) in Lexington, KY. in 1880. Obituary of John in
Lexington Herald, July 7, 1915, says John arrived in 1874, 'soon followed by
his brothers, Pat, Terence, and Tom'.

1910: Ferguson, Mag. Dist. 1, Precinct 6, Pulaski, KY, T624, Coll 500, Part 2, p. 76 B, Sheet 6: 119 Reddick St. McElroy, Terence F., Head, Male, white, age 46, married 25 years, born Ireland, immigrated 1877; naturalized, no occupation, renting home; Bridgett E., Wife, Female, white, age 46, married 25 years, 8 children, 7 living, born in PA, parents born in Ireland, can read and write; Thomas P., son, male, white, 22, single, b. KY, Apprentice Marchinist, employed; John H., son, male, white, 19, single, born in Alabama, Apprentice Machinist; Mary M., Female, white, age 12, single, born KY, in school; Phillip, Son, male, white, 10, single, born KY, in school; Leo, son, male, white, 8, single, b. KY, in school.
(this entry not found until July 11, 2004! thanks to Ancestry.com; however, not found by searching for Terence F. McElroy; instead, I entered 'McElroy' for all censuses, found about 400 in 1910, and this one listed as Terence F. McElroy in Ferguson, Pulaski! The handwriting is very bad, and am not sure how indexer discovered his name was supposed to be Terence F., or even McElroy).
OCCUPATION: Horse trainer (1880 census); farmer (marriage record);stone mason
(1900 census); contractor (death cert.); employed in Queen & Crescent shops in
Somerset (obituary, Lexington Herald, 21 Feb. 1914). Between 1902 and 1907, he
was owner of a 100-acre farm in Lincoln Co. His son John once described him
as a 'small contractor'.
Farm in 1906 tax records was worth $500.00; he had 5 horses ($200), 2 mules
($100) and 4 head of cattle ($50); agricultural implements worth $50, wagons
and carriage worth $40, sewing machine $5, and furniture worth $50. In 1904
tax valuation, also had 'pianoforte & other musical instruments' worth $25,
but that was not mentioned in subsequent records.
