He was the son of Robert James McFarland, civil engineer and surveyor, and Dorothea Hughes.

In 1862 with his parents, the family immigrated from Londonderry, Ireland, to Auckland, New Zealand, onboard the Ida Ziegler.

Career

He was initially a surveyor in the Thames district. In early 1880s he resided in Ellerslie, Auckland, and secured land and plans for building a church there.

1886-96 Minister, Bombay, diocese of Auckland.

1896-1902 Vicar, Te Aroha.

1902-21 Vicar, St Barnabas, Mt Eden.

1914 Canon, Auckland.

1922-40 Chaplain to Bishop.

1923-8 Trustee, College of St John the Evangelist, Auckland.

Marriage and family

On 19 January 1888 he married Frances Maria Taylor, eldest twin daughter of Robert Cecil Taylor and Elizabeth Paul Duffus, with issue three sons and one daughter.

In 1916 he presented a new altar at St Barnabas's Church, in Memory of his youngest son, Edgar Alan McFarland.

Residences

In 1941 they resided at 28 Brighton Road, Parnell, Auckland.

Death and burial

He died on 28 December 1944 at Auckland. He was buried on 30 December 1944 in Purewa Cemetery. His widow died in 1954 and was buried with him.

Legacy

On 25 January 1997 the New Zealand Herald published a feature regarding Edgar James McFarland building his own house with detailed fine plaster ceilings, at 19 Bellevue Road, Mt Eden.
