William was born 15 May 1822, the son of Robert McFarland and his wife Jane, immigrants from Ireland.

William married Mary Elizabeth "Jane" Wright, daughter of David Wright and Mary Hicks (1824-1885).

William died on 28 February 1890 and was buried in Needmore Cemetery, Arvilla, Pleasants, West Virginia, United States.[1]
