Mary was only 5 years old when her mother died. Care of the house fell to sister Caroline McGee, who was 17 years old. Their father remarried 3+ years later in January 1867 and the children had a stepmother. When Mary's brother John McGee married in 1876, Mary was a witness who signed the marriage certificate. Brother George McGee was the other witness. After the wedding, John's new wife helped Mary keep the house, as the stepmother had become dissatisfied and left the fall before. It was later the same year that Mary died from consumption.
Her gravestone reads; "Mary J. McGee, died Dec. 16th, 1876, AE. 18 Y's 2 M's & 13 D's. Just as the morning of her life, was opening into day. The young and lovely spirit passed, From earth and grief away."
