Robert McGill, the son of William McGill, was a Presbyterian minister and editor. He married Catherine McLimont in Scotland July 28, 1829, [1] just before being ordained by the Presbytery of Glasgow. In October, he and Catherine emigrated to Upper Canada, where Robert had accepted the position of Presbyterian minister in Niagara-on-the-Lake. In 1831 he oversaw the construction of a new church, St. Andrew's.

In 1837 he founded and was editor of the Canadian Christian Examiner and Presbyterian Review. He became pastor of St. Paul's in Montreal in 1845.[2]
Robert's work on behalf of the Presbyterian Church was recognized in 1853 when he was awarded an honorary DD by the University of Glasgow.[3]
