Biography

According to the 1851 Scotland Census, John was born about 1801 in Girvan. He is the son of John McGill and Agnes Affleck. [1]

In 1828 John married Jean Ross in Girvan. The Banns were called on the 15th, 16th and 23rd November and it was likely they were married within a few days although the actual date is is not recorded. [2],[3]

Most of John's children are named after his siblings however the name 'Bryce' is not a commonly used name and this is what patricularly links John to the family of John McGill and Agnes Affleck.

Children:

The 1851 Census indicates that John was a cotton weaver, aged about 50, living with his family in Wilson Street, Girvan. .[4]

John contracted emphysema, no doubt as a result of his occupation and after suffering 12 years, he died on 8th June 1860 at Townhead, Girvan. He is described as 'formerly a cotton weaver, married' and was 60 years old which confirms his approximate date of birth; his father is listed as John McGill, labourer (dec) however there is no record of his mother nor of his wife. His death was registered by his son John, resident in Old Dailly, Ayrshire and he was interred in Girvan Churchyard, known today as Old Street Cemetery. [5]
