Note

Note: Book D, page 37, line 254 lists Michael McGinnis, died 23 Nov. 1928, age 82, born 25 Jul., 1846 in Ireland. He was a widower, retired farmer, parents John McGinnis and Mary Gehagen, both born in Ireland.
I located his obituary at the Faribault library. They has an extensive collection of newspapers on microfilm. Some are indexed and I noticed several McGinnis names I did not look up.
The obit says he was born in West Mayo County. Should this really be West Meath? It says he lived a few years in the Eastern U.S. and then spent nearly 65 years in Shieldsville. Putting these dates together with the 1900 census data means he immigrated when he was 7 and moved to Shieldsville when he was 17.
There is an 1865 Minnesota census tha t could confirm these dates. 23 Nov 1928 Faribault News: Michael McGinnis, Resident of Shieldsville for 65 years, died early today.Michael McGinnis, 82, and more nearly 65 years a resident of the Shieldsville community, died this morning at his home at Shieldsville. Mr. McGinnis was born in West Mayo County, Ireland, July 25, 1846 and after a few years spent in the eastern section of this country, he came to the Sheildsville community where he resided practically his entire life. He was one of Shieldsvill's oldest pioneers. The funeral services will be held Monday morning, Nov 26, at 9:30 at St. Patri ck's church, Shieldsville. Burial will be made in the church cemetery. (note: all other resources say he was born in Westmeath not West Mayo).
from the book 'A History of the Brown(e) Descendents - Ireland to America' pg 145 Michael 'Apple Man' & Mary (Richardson) McGinnis (excerpt from Rice Co Families)Michael McGinnis married Mary Richardson of Irin township in 1883. He followed his father's footsteps and became a farmer and had an apple orchard of 700 trees on the original farm. He was known as the 'Apple Man'. The farm remained in the McGinnis name for 120 years until is was sold about two years ago (1979). Michael and Mary had nine children who were all baptized by Father Slevin at St. Patrick's church in Shieldsville, Minnesota. Mary died in 1922 and John, the oldest son, remained on the farm until his death in 1923. Edmund tood over the original farm before his father's death. His father, Michael, died in 1928 and his mother, Mary, died November 7,1922. Both are buried at St. Patrick's cemetery, at Shieldsville, Minnesota. William married Ethel Johnson and the lived in Vermillion, Alberta, Canada. He farmed and threshed for many people. They had 10 children. Ethel died in 1969 and William in 1977. Catherine did domestic work in Faribault for $3 a week. She died in 1911 at the age of 22. Marie also did domestic work and married Henry Steffel. They have two sons; Edward and Jerome. Henry died in 1954 and Marie in 1975. Loretta taught school for many years in Rice County until she married Richard James Brown of Williston North Dakota. They have 6 children. Upon retirement, they moved back to Faribault in 1968. Richard died in 1969 and Loretta died in 19 80 at the age of 85. Michael Jr. died in infancy. Edmund married Evelyn Dube of Faribault. He tood over the original farm before his father's death. They have four children: Jean, Michael, Carmen and John. Edmund died in 1937.Agnes, who was employed at the State School and Hospital for many years, married Myles Hunter and they have two children; Jane and Delores. They operated a bakery and a restaurant for 28 years in Farmington. They sold hamburgers for 5 cen ts each. Myles died in 1972 as a result of an automobile accident. Rosella, the youngest, taught at the State School and Hospital for 39 years. She married Lewis Brazil and they have 3 children. Lewis died in 1961.
Book A, page 146, line 12 lists McGinnis died 3 Nov. 1892, age 1 day. Parents are Michael and Mary McGinnis, he born in Ireland, she in Minnesota. This would be the 9th child referred to in the 1900 census.Book C, page 402, line 234 lists Mrs. Mary McGinnis, died 7 Nov. 1922, age 62, born 4 Nov. 1860 in Minnesota. She was married and a housewife. Father was Michael Richardson, mother Catherine Kelly, both born in Ireland. I did not look for h er obituary, though newspapers for this time are available at the library.

Abbreviation: McGinnis Family Info. & Census Entries. (1)
Note: The McGinnis family came from Blackstone Mass, in 1860 to Shieldsville MN Mary married Edward Walsh Rose married James Sherman in 1881, and on their wedding day they presented a pair of brass candlesticks to St. Joseph's altar. They are still in use today. In 1883 Michael McGinnis and Miss Mary Richardson were married. They made their home in Erin while they lived. Their family was: John and Catherine (deceased), Rosella (Mrs. L. Brazil), of Fairbault; Loretta (Mrs R. Brown), of Montana; Agnes (Mrs. Miles Hunter) of Farmington; Marie (Mrs. Steppan) of St. Paul; William lives in Canada; Edmund married Miss Evelyn Duby of Fairbault. He died in 1937 and left the following small children: Jeane, Carmen, Michael, and Edmund. From: 'Rice County Families' pg 385 published by the Rice Co Historical Soc in 1983 John and Mary McGinnisJohn and Mary (Gaffney) McGinnis came from Westmeath, Ireland whith their 4 year old son, Michael, and settled at Blackstone, Massachusetts. From there they moved to Erin Township. They settled on a farm near General Shields Lake in 1850 and received the deed to the property of 160 acres in 1858. Michael was the only boy and oldest child. He had four sisters. Ann stayed in Balckstone, Massachusetts; Mary married Edward Walsh and they had six children; They live in Erin Township. Rose married James Sherman of Minneapolis and they made their home there. Bridget married James Coleman of Rice County and they had two children. OTHER NOTESI did copy some pages from 'A History of Brown(e) Descendants' that has a sketch of the Michael McGinnis and Mary Richardson family. Their daughter Anna (Loretta) married a Richard Brown. It says Michael is called the 'Apple Man' because ofa 700 tree orchard on his farm. The farm was his father's and was in the McGinnis name for 120 years according to this write-up. I found a plat map there from 1874 that shows Michael McGinnis on 160 acres, the SE 1/4 of section 33 of Erintownship. I went to this land, but signs and gates prevented me from getting any photos of the buildings. There is another(?) Michael McGinnis in an index to land records, 23 Jun. 1857, on the SW 1/4 of section 4 of Shieldsville Township. This agrees with an 1850 - 1860 plat map as well as a 1915 map they have. Your Michael would have been about 11 years old in 1857 (based on the age given in his death record) so I wonder who this Michael McGinnis is. Some time inFaribault's Register of Deeds office would shed light on this I'm sure. I believe the Michael in Erin township section 33 is your ancestor based on the US census data. In 1870, John, age 58, and Mary, age 58, lived in Erin with Irish bornchildren Rosa, age 24, and Michael, age 22. In 1880 they are still there, John (6?) and Mary (60), with Michael (30) and Mary Welsh? (15) and Bridget Coleman (10), both grand children. Why are they living with their grand parents? In 1900Michael (53) is in Erin with wife Mary (39) and 8 children, all born in Minnesota. Mary had one other child no longer living. Michael is shown as Irish born and Naturalized having immigrated in 1853. He owns the farm with no mortgage. Marywas born in Minnesota and her parents in Ireland. I looked at the 1860 census too, but the film copy they have is so light I could not read it well at all for Erin township. John McGinnis' death is recorded in the Faribault Government Services Center books. Book A, page 66, line 39, shows he died 3 Oct. 1882, age 71. He was married, a retired farmer and he died in Wheatland, the township north of Erin. Was he living with one of his children?
