Name: Prudence Irene McGinnis^[1]

There is disagreement in the records that I have about her given name. Some have Prudence Irene, and others have Irene Prudence. The Gibson Family History that I have in my possession names her Irene, which would not be unusual if that is her middle name. But there are two records that name her Irene Prudence: The Tennessee Family Group sheet record by Ila East, and the FAG record that can be seen in the notes below. Both of her census records and her marriage record has the name Prudence. So take your pick. This profile named her Prudence Irene and so I have left it that way once I took over management of the orphaned profile.

PARENTS CONTROVERSY

This profile was created by someone else and orphaned. As the new manager, I do not believe the parents as they are assigned to Prudence Irene. I originally chose not to replace them (Samuel McGinnis and Mahala Bridges) as there are many who do believe it and one of them is Barb Marcovecchio who is a professional genealogist and a descendant of this Gibson family. Her name is all over the sources for Gibson found below and on the net. She worked very closely with me when I first entered this fascinating world of genealogy four years and taught me much. Barb is no longer active and I have just discovered what I believe to be Irene's true parents.

I did believe that they were Phineas McGinnis & Rachel Mahala Evans. They were married16 Jul 1826 in Union IL.^[7]

But I now have the records that show that the real parents of Prudence Irene Gibson are Henry McGinnis, brother to both Samuel and Finis, and Mahala Evans, sister to Rachel Evans and daughters of George Evans. Please read the profile of Henry McGinnis for the facts and sources. The major record that revealed the truth is that Rachel Evans died in 1837 in Union County IL and left 6 orphans, all named in the guardian papers, and Prudence, plus her brother Phineas, was NOT named in the list of the children. These two are found in the 1850 census of Union IL with Mahala McGinnis. Many researchers assigned her as Mahala Bridges, while others like me thought it was Rachel Mahala Evans. Both of these are incorrect. She is Mahala Evans.
