Biography

Mary McGuire was probably born about 1725. This date is an estimate based on the marriage of her daughter Sarah in 1760. Mary's parents and her birth place remain unknown.

It is currently thought that Mary was probably a sister to Zachariah, William and Owen McGuire, all of whom lived in Goochland or Cumberland Co. at the same time Mary was there. William Swanson and wife Mary sold some land to William McGuire, most likely her brother. Parents and birth places of these men are also unknown. However, there is some scant evidence that all of these McGuire's may have been raised in Hanover Co., Virginia. Unfortunately, most of the records for Virginia counties east of I-95 were destroyed during the Civil War and research there is difficult if not impossible.

No record for William Swanson prior to his 1750 purchase of land in Goochland Co. have been located. So it assumed William and Mary married elsewhere. Their first children appear to have been born in Goochland Co.

William and Mary migrated from Goochland Co. through the Virginia counties of Bedford, Pittsylvania, Henry and Franklin before moving to Georgia in 1787. Many of their children also moved to Georgia about the same time.

Mary died in Oglethorpe Co., GA before 18 September 1811.
