Biography

Jane was baptised May 28, 1828 in Inverness, Invernessshire, Scotland, the daughter of James McHattie and Patalina Roy.^[1]

Her family emigrated to Canada, settling in Beaverton, Ontario, where her father worked as a blacksmith.

Jane married James Bates in 1860 and their son James was born the following year.^[2][3]

Two daughters Ann and Jane were added to the family and by the 1881 Census, Jane was a widow,^[4]
