Thomas Robert Loftus McInnes was born in Victoria, British Columbia on November 26, 1891[1][2]. He was the son of Thomas McInnes and Laura Elizabeth Hostetter.
Like his father, Loftus became a poet. He worked in the Department of Indian Affairs in Ottawa and married Natalie, the daughter of poet Archibald Lampman.[3]
