Biography

By his first cousin once removed J. Rieman McIntosh, 1978: [1]

"James Higgins McIntosh M.D. born Oct. 3rd, 1866 [2] [3] [4] in Newberry, S.C. and died Sept. 2nd, 1944 in Columbia, S.C. [2] [5] [6] He and his wife are buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Columbia. [7] After graduating from Newberry Academy he entered Newberry College and graduated in 1884 at the age of 17 with an A.B. degree. He then studied chemistry and psychology at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Md. 1884-1886 and was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, New York City in 1888 with an M.D. degree. Following this he accepted a position for two years on the staff of Bellevue Hospital, New York City, where during his last year he was associated with the Society for the Lying-In. It was largely through his efforts that the original Broome Street Dispensary became a success and a permanent lying-in institution. He then practiced medicine in his native town of Newberry for 10 years taking over much of the practice of his father Dr. James McIntosh in 1892. In April 1900 he moved to Columbia where he first associated with Dr. Benjamin Taylor. He soon went into practice for himself and established a large and active practice of medicine for 42 years.
"In Columbia, Dr. McIntosh quickly took a place of leadership in the medical and civic life of the State Capital. He served as examining physician of the local draft board during World War I. From 1903 to 1937 he was state referee for the Mutual Life Insurance Co. of New York and for a number of years he was chief of the medical staff of the Baptist Hospital. He was also the author of many outstanding medical papers. [8] Dr. McIntosh received many honors from organizations of his profession. He served as president of the Columbia Medical Society, which in 1942 presented Dr. McIntosh with a silver service "in appreciation of a life spent unselfishly in the service of humanity." His patients and friends gave witness to their love and esteem by presenting an oil portrait of him to the Columbia Hospital (now Richland Memorial Hospital). Perhaps best of all, he won a unique place in the affections of the community as an outstanding family doctor.
"He married Frances Nance Baxter, Nov. 2nd, 1892. [2] The children of Dr. James Higgins McIntosh and Frances Nance Baxter were:" [9] [10] [11] [12] [13]
1. James, b. 06 May 1895

"Note: The information about the children of Dr. James Higgins McIntosh was obtained from his son James McIntosh, his daughter Frances McIntosh, his daughter Nancy McIntosh Pearlstine and his daughter-in-law Winifred Morgan McIntosh, wife of Baxter McIntosh (1977)."
