He was born on 20 Sep 1822 at Indian Springs, Georgia, USA and his parents were Susannah (Rowe) and William McIntosh who was a mixed-blood Chief of the Muskogee (Lower Creeks) Indians.
In 1830 his parents moved the family to Indian Territory. As an adult, he farmed and ranched there. He was also active in politics and served as a member of the Creek Nation's House of Warriors and Supreme Court. Prior to the Civil war he was a prominent Creek proponent of the southern cause.

In 1861 he took command of the First Regiment of Creek Mounted Volunteers and in 1864 his regiment became part of the First Indian Cavalry Brigade under Brig. Gen Stand Watie. He led his men in the battles of Round Mountain, Pea Ridge, Fort Wayne, First Cabin Creek and Honey Springs.
At the conclusion of the American Civil War, he represented the Southern Creek faction at peace negotiations at Ford Smith, Arkansas and Washington, DC.
He was a political and military leader of the Creek Nation who was active in tribal affairs until his passing.
He died on 10 April 1896 in the Creek Nation, Indian Territory, USA (now Fame, McIntosh County, Oklahoma, USA). [2]
