Dungog Chronicle: Durham and Gloucester Advertiser NSW, Friday 24 Jan 1902

Stroud.

(From our own Correspondent)

The funeral of Mr James McIntyre took place on Monday afternoon. The attendance was very large, nearly 300 residents being present. Old residents say it is the largest ever held in the district. The deceased gentleman was Coroner for Port Stephens district and a Licensing Magistrate. He resided in Stroud for over 40 years, and was held in very high esteem by all. A short service was conducted by the Rev. P. McQueen in the Presbyterian Church (of which Mr McIntyre was an elder) before proceeding to the cemetery. The reverend gentleman made feeling reference to the many virtues and good qualities of the deceased. The death has thrown quite a cloud over the town, for many have lost a lifelong friend and adviser. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the members of the family.[2]

Dungog Chronicle: Durham and Gloucester Advertiser NSW, Tuesday 28 Jan 1902

The late Mr James Mclntyre, J.P.

The Presbyterian Church, and the town of Stroud, have suffered an irreparable loss, by the removal by death of one of its most loyal sons. The late Mr James McIntyre was the eldest son of the late Mr James McIntyre, of "Braemar," Stroud, and Kirremiur, Scotland, and a highly esteemed Elder of the Dungog-Stroud congregation. He was born at Patrick's Plains on 29th June, 1842, and when two years of age was taken to Stroud by his parents, and has resided in that little English like town till the day of his death, which was on Sunday, January 29th, 1902. At the age of 24 Mr McIntyre married a daughter of the late Mr John Williams, by whom be had a family of 5 daughters and three sons. On the death of his father, Mr McIntyre was elected to the vacant Eldership, and continued to act till a few weeks ago when illness laid him aside. The handsome little Church at Stroud was erected mainly through the efforts of Mr McIntyre. Its care was a labour of love on his part. During the fortnightly visits of the Minister from Dungog he has always been a welcome visitor in Mr McIntyre's hospitable home. Mr McIntyre was appointed a Justice of the Peace many years ago, and Coroner for the Port Stephens district about twelve years ago. He was also senior Magistrate of the Licensing Court, President of the Progress Committee, and ex President of the School of Arts. He has frequently represented the congregation at the general Assembly, his last being at last year's meeting. The remains of the late Mr McIntyre were conveyed from his late residence, "Cambridge House," on January 20th, to St. James' Church, where a most solemn and impressive sermon was conducted by the Rev. P. McQueen. The accommodation in the Church was not half sufficient for the large gathering who assembled to show their last mark of respect for the deceased. As the cortege entered, the strains of the Dead March in Saul were heard upon the organ, which was presided over, by Miss McRae. The service began by the singing of the 70th hymn from Church Praise, followed by an earnest prayer. The lesson was the 11th chapter of St. John, and the discourse from the 23rd verse of the same chapter; "Thy brother shall rise again." At the conclusion of the preacher's remarks, hymn 406 was sung, and the procession reformed, the remains being conveyed to the Presbyterian cemetery, The chief mourners were — Messrs Charles, John and Leslie McIntyre (sons), William, Charles and J.A. McIntyre (brothers), E.C. Nicholls and T.D. Hutchinson (brothers-in-law), Charles Bowthorn (son-in-law), William, Herbert and Albert McIntyre (nephews), Arthur and James Gossip (nephews), Edward and Thomas Nicholls (nephews). The attendance was about 300. Amongst those present, in addition to those mentioned, being Mr G.A. Mackay, J.P., Mr J.A. McKenzie, J.P., Dr Wright, J.P., Rev. A.C. Thomas, C.E., Rev. F.H. Thomas, C.E , Mr E.E. Mitchell, Mr John Gorton and many others. Wreaths and messages of sympathy were forwarded by Mrs McQueen, Mrs F.A. Hooke, Miss McIntyre, Miss Gossip, Misses D. Cohen, Dr Finlay, W.H. Etheridge, Esq, Mr Arthur Osborne, Mr O.E. Gossip, Miss McRae, Miss McCarroll, Mrs D. Young, Mr D. McRae, Mr and Mrs Cater and many others.[3]
