Biography

1776 Project
Corporal James McKENZIE served with 71st Regiment of Foot during the American Revolution.

James was born before 1764, probably in Scotland. He was a corporal in the 71st Regiment, Fraser's Highlanders, during the Revolutionary War.[1]. He arrived unmarried at Guysborough in June 1784 with the Loyalists and disbanded soldiers of the "Associated Departments of the Army and Navy"[2] where he received a land grant of 200 acres, plus a Town Lot at Guysborough.[3][4]

Shortly after arriving at Guysborough, James married Hannah Larribee,[5], and son Simon was born the following year.[6] Other children include John (bp. 1787, d. 1787),[7][8] Mary (bp. 1789),[9] Hannah (bp. 1795),[10] Elizabeth (bp. 1796),[11] Daniel (bp.1798),[12] and Isaiah (bp.1791).[13]

James is listed in the tax assessment at Guysborough in 1792,[14] and in 1793.[15]
