He was the son of William McKay and Lucy Cunningham.[1] Known as Nelson in the McKay family but Jack by his wife and her family.
Nelson was a Merchant Marine in his youth. When he finished with sailing the world he took over Johnson’s Tyne Factory and established ship salvage company in South Melbourne with financial help from H.V.McKay and Sir William Angliss. His first purchases were retired ships from the Dutch Navy and The Cerberus which was decommission and sold in 1924. The Cerberus shell remained in the Maribyrnong River until Nelson convinced the Sandringham Council to sink it in Half Moon Bay where it still rests.
Nelson McKay married Tilly BRAUER in 1926. They had two children, daughter Dorothy Linda and son John Arthur.[2]
He died at his home in Embling Road Malvern in 1961, aged 68 y.o.[3][4]
