Notes

According to a 1957 letter written by Patricia (McKay) McLennan to her parents while travelling in Scotland, she recounted family history conversations she had with her half-uncle Angus MacKay (find additional written accounts by Patricia of the Scottish MacKays on Angus' page):
"Dad's ancestors originally came from Sutherland (county or province) northern Scotland which was known as 'the land of the Mackays.' Angus doesn't know why they moved to Lewis or how long ago it was. He thinks that Murdoch (his & dad's grandfather) was thrown out of his croft at Galson and moved to Bragar - few miles from Stornaway (which is Dad's home town). Unfortunately, Angus' father died when he was 4 yrs old and by the time he became interested in the history of the family it was too late because his mother was too old to remember details. He says next time he's in Bragar he intends to look into it further (tho' he hasn't been there in 10 years.) He used to visit there more often when he was in Uist. Now he has no reason. Incidentally, he put up a nice stone for his father and mother. (Did you ever get a picture of it?) He says there are still people on Lewis who remember Dad and ask about him - that they will be interested to know I was in Skye."
"Isaac Campbell of Bragar always used to ask about Dad. He was at the Lakehead when Dad was a boy. Angus' mother often used to tell him what a 'nice wee laddie' Dad was. He thinks she told him that Dad wore a little red tammy when he left for Canada. I wonder if Dad remembers."
"Angus is not clear on Dad's generation of the family - and of course I know next to nothing myself - except for Mary and Uncle Norman. I always understood Dad was a twin. Angus thinks his brother was a little older and died after an accident when he was 7 or 8 (drowning or pneumonia?)"
Murdoch, Dad's grandfather was married to Peggy Matheson (Uig - Lewis). She was known in Bragar as "Peggy the Egyptian", because she was born in Egypt. Her father was one of the Scottish warriors of his time (reading som "istory" while there), seems to me the Scots were always fighting between themselves, or if that became tiresome, with the Turks or Egyptians just for a change of locality, and new faces. Anyway, this time the Matheson clan were fighting the Egyptians, and in those days the wives 'followed' their husbands to the wars. That's how come our great grandmother was born in Egypt. Her father was killed in that war and her mother returned to Lewis. When grandfather Angus was a young boy he was known as 'Angus the Egyptian'. I always imagined Grandfather Angus was a big man, but apparently he was small and slight, except for his chest and shoulders. He was known as a 'great fighter'. Black hair and eyes"." - Patricia McLennan
