Biography

Harriet (McKay) Birston was a Canadian First Peoples and member of the Metis Nation.

In 1841, Harriet's parents and siblings joined the Sinclair Expedition party from Red River Canada and traveled overland to the Puget Sound area of Washington. The 1841 settlers had been recruited for the Hudson Bay Company Puget Sound Agricultural Company venture at Fort Nisqually [1]

Harriet McKay, was born September of 1841 at either Ft. Spokane, Washington or on trail to Oregon Territory, USA

In 1857 Harriet married her brother-in-law, Joseph Stewart SPENCE, son of Margaret WHITFORD and Archibald Stewart SPENCE (1797-1851). Joseph SPENCE died in 1858

In 1859 Harriet remarried to Miles BIRSTON, son of Grizzel ROWLAND an James BIRSTON (b-1809) who was also among the 1841Red River settlers to Oregon in 1841. They had one child, Samuel

Harriet died 1869 in North Plains, Washington, OR, USA.
