Francis McKee was born 22 July 1770 in Manchester, Hartford, Connecticut[1]. He was the son of Deacon Robert McKee, a Revolutionary War veteran and Mabel Hollister[1].
On 3 September 1795 he married Margaret Hollister of Eastbury, Connecticut[2][1]. They went on to have at least 11 children together[3][1]. Please see Research Notes. Soon after the marriage they must have moved to upstate New York as we know their third child, Mercy, was born there and their first two, Margaret and Charlotte, probably were too.
In the 1800 census[4], Francis and his family were listed as living in Paris, Oneida County, New York. Three children are listed, one boy and two girls, probably Charlotte, James and Mercy [3][1].
In the 1810 census[5], Francis and his family were listed as living in Adams, Jefferson County, New York. Six children are listed, three boys (one over ten) and three girls (one over ten). These are probably James, Mercy, Betsy, Lyman, Sally and Philotus.
In the 1820 census[6], Francis and his family were still listed as living in Adams. Ten children are listed, four boys and six girls.
In the 1830 census[7], Francis and his family were still listed as living in Adams. Six children are listed and five older adults from his children's generation. Clearly, there were now grandchildren living on the farm.
In the 1820 census[8], Francis and his family were still listed as living in Adams. Ten children are listed, four boys and six girls.
At some point in the 1830s a large part of his family moved to Byron, Ogle County, Illinois. No record of Francis has been found in the 1840 census. About this time Margaret must have passed away though no records of this have been found.
In the 1850 census[9], Francis, then 80, was living with Holister relatives in Rochester, New York.
In the 1855 New York state census[10], Francis, then 85, was living with his daughter Mercy and her husband in Rochester.
In the 1860 census[11], Francis, then 90, was living with his daughter Almira and her husband in Byron.
He passed away shortly after the 1860 census.
There are two lists of the eleven children of Francis and Margaret: one in the Presbyterian church register for Adams, New York[3], the second in the 'Board, Trenchard, Wilsey, McKee, and kindred families' book by Frances Board Rose, published in 1961[1]. Most of the names are the same but the order is not. The order in the church register is most likely that given by Margaret and has been accepted as being more likely correct. It also ties better with the dates in later censuses.
