Biography

Doctor of Physic, of Argyllshire, Scotland, late of Battersea, London, and late Medical Officer at Madeira, where he died.

Background

He was born in 1796 or 1797 in Argyll, Scotland. In MyHeritage.com it lists Dugald as the son of John McKellar (born March 24, 1766 at Dalavich, Argyllshire) and Jane (née Ryburn; born Oct 9, 1768 at Campbeltown, Argyllshire). This has not been confirmed separately.

Marriage and family

In 1827 he married Annette Clarke, the youngest daughter of Frances Arnaud and John Alden Clarke, of Battersea Rise, London, with issue 12 children.

Madeira

In 1840 for the benefit of his health, the family with seven children went to Madeira. Their eldest son, Edward, stayed in London studying medicine like his father before him. Four daughters were born in Madeira, two of whom died in infancy and who were buried in the British Cemetery of Funchal.

Death and burial

He died in June 1849 in Madeira, aged 52. He was buried with his two infant daughters, in the British Cemetery of Funchal.

Probate

His Will was Proved on 18 October 1849.

Legacy

In 1852 his widow, with nine of their ten surviving children, emigrated onboard the St Michael barque to New Plymouth, Taranaki, New Zealand, where they settled on land at Omata. His widow survived him by 41 years and died in New Plymouth in 1890.

Memorial

He is mentioned on the gravestone of his wife in Te Henui Cemetery, New Plymouth, Taranaki, New Zealand.

"In Memory of Annette McKellar, Died at New Plymouth April 1st 1890 Aged 80 Years. Also of Her Husband Dugald McKellar MD of Battersea and Madeira, Died June 1849 Aged 52 Years. And Children Selina Jane, Died July 19th 1844 Aged 9 Months. Isabella Courtenay, Died March 15th 1850 Aged 2½ Years Buried in Funchal Cemetery Madeira. 'Trust in the Lord.'" [1]

Research notes

His son, Henry Scott McKellar, a genealogist, referred to his aunts Scott with whom he used to stay when he was young. They may have been named Christina and Jane. He also stated the family was descended from British nobility, including the Nevilles, Percys, Staffords, etc. Cathi Maryon (2008).
