Biography

William was born in 1886 in Victoria, Australia. He was the son of John McKenna and Margaret Geaney.

He emigrated from Australia to New Zealand where he was a stock agent. He married Gertrude Leonora Land in 1907.

They had at least one child; Margaret Vera Leonora.

In 1914 William was recorded at 5 Hagley Street, Riccarton, Christchurch with his wife Gertrude; he was a stock agent.

His name was published in the New Zealand, World War I Army Reserve Rolls (1916-1917). He was living at 62 Harman Street, Christchurch at the time, working as a Stock Agent.

In 1918 William was involved in an incident where a young girl was struck by his horse and gig. Tragically the girl died after initially seeming to be alright:

PRESS, VOLUME LIV, ISSUE 16306, 2 SEPTEMBER 1918, PAGE 6:

CASUALTIES.
FATAL TRAP ACCIDENT.
On Saturday afternoon, about 4.30, Miss Rita Robson, aged 17, who lived with her parents at 151 Colombo street, Sydenham, was knocked down by a horse and gig, driven by William Carbury McKenna, stock agent, at the corner of Antigua street and Oxford terrace. Miss Robson was talking to some friends at the time the accident occurred, and the driver of the trap and a lady friend of Miss Robson's helped her to a seat near the hospital. Apparently McKenna thought she was not hurt much and he drove away, refusing, it is alleged, to give his name. Miss Robson was taken into the nurses' quarters, and from there admitted to the hospital. She seemed to be recovering all right, but at 9 p.m. she had a fit and at 6 a.m. yesterday another seizure occurred, death resulting about an hour later. An inquest will be held at the hospital at 2.30 p.m. to-day, before the Coroner, Mr H. W. Bishop.[1]

At a subsequent inquest, the Coroner found that Miss Robson had met her death after being knocked over by a trap being driven by William Carbury McKenna.[2]

William and Gertrude divorced in about 1925.

He married, secondly, Dorothy Hutchins in 1925.

In the 1928 NZ Electoral Rolls he was recorded at 117 Cole Street, Masterton, a stock buyer.

He passed away some time after 1928.
