William was born in 1886 in Victoria, Australia. He was the son of John McKenna and Margaret Geaney.
He emigrated from Australia to New Zealand where he was a stock agent. He married Gertrude Leonora Land in 1907.
They had at least one child; Margaret Vera Leonora.
In 1914 William was recorded at 5 Hagley Street, Riccarton, Christchurch with his wife Gertrude; he was a stock agent.
His name was published in the New Zealand, World War I Army Reserve Rolls (1916-1917). He was living at 62 Harman Street, Christchurch at the time, working as a Stock Agent.
In 1918 William was involved in an incident where a young girl was struck by his horse and gig. Tragically the girl died after initially seeming to be alright:

At a subsequent inquest, the Coroner found that Miss Robson had met her death after being knocked over by a trap being driven by William Carbury McKenna.[2]
William and Gertrude divorced in about 1925.
He married, secondly, Dorothy Hutchins in 1925.
In the 1928 NZ Electoral Rolls he was recorded at 117 Cole Street, Masterton, a stock buyer.
He passed away some time after 1928.
