OBITUARY

THE CHARITON LEADER Chariton, Iowa Tuesday, March 4, 1947

ALICE EMILY HOLMES

Alice Emily Holmes, wife of William H. Holmes, was born December 25, 1858, near Chariton in Benton township, Lucas county, Iowa, and passed away February 20, 1947, at the age of 89 years, 1 month and 26 days.

She was the daughter of Ananias and Lucy McKinley and one of a family of seven children, five having preceded her in death: Charles S.; Clara Threlkeld; Fillman; Laura Poush and Ascenith Thompson. The only survivor of her immediate family is one brother, James M. McKinley, of Gering, Neb.

She was united in marriage to Joseph V. Dorsey, March 1, 1882, and to this union one child, a daughter, Ellen Dorsey Colver, was born, who passed away July 6, 1934. The husband passed away May 29, 1914.

On October 12, 1915, she was united in marriage to William H. Holmes, of Benton township, who survives her. They have made their home in Chariton throughout the years.

She was a loving mother and counselor to the seven children of Mr. Holmes, who loved her dearly, and with their families will ever miss her from their midst. They are Edward D. of Melrose; Jennie Querrey of Chariton; LaBurna Campbell of Indianola; George A. of San Antonio, Texas; Glen of Harlenger, Texas; Vivian Cain of Park City, Montana and Mary Trumble of Sack, Canada.

She was converted early in life, placing her membership in the Baptist church. She has always been deeply devoted to her husband and family and along with them leaves a host of friends who will greatly mourn her loss.

Thus ends the life of another early settler and pioneer of Iowa. She has endured the hardships that are attendant to a new and unsettled land, but to her came the satisfaction of seeing this early desolation become a land of thriving cities and prosperous farms.

Casket bearers were the sons-in-law of the husband's children. Rev. Archie Beals, of Russell, conducted the funeral services at the Mrs. Frank Dunshee funeral home Sunday, February 23, at 2 p.m.

In accordance with her request Rev. Beals read St. John 14 for the service and she also requested the hymns "Going Down the Valley," "Where the Gates Swing Outward Never," and "The Old Rugged Cross."
