Biography

Elder John Watson McKinney, aged 91 years and 10 days, died at the home of his son, Josiah W. McKinney, Sunday morning, November 17, 1901 of old age. He was born in Rockcastle county, Kentucky, November 10, 1810. He joined the M.E. Church March 22, 1826; was married to Rebecca Pitman. There were born to them seven sons and four daughters, three sons now dead. In 1845 he moved with his family to Russell county, Kentucky, and joined the United Baptist church. In 1853 he was ordained a minister. March 11, 1850, he moved to this county and joined the Old Friendship church of United Baptists. His wife died August 21, 1880 aged 70 years. He has now living 80 grandchildren, 160 great grandchildren and 20 great-great grandchildren, having lived to see his fifth generation. He remained a true christian until his death. He was buried November 18th by the side of his companion in the Old Friendship Cemetery, Warrick County. A very large crowd attended his funeral. His son-in-law Elder J.W. Hopper, assisted by his son, Elder G.H. McKinney, conducted the religious service. He was honored and loved by everyone who knew him.
