Biography

Beniah was born in 1798, Loudoun County, Virginia, the son of Eli Mcknight and Alice unknown. The 1830 US Census have Beniah Mcknight living in Somerset Twp., Belmont County, Ohio, age 30-40; 0-5 1 male; 5-10 1 male and Jane age 20-30 and 2 females ages 0-5. This we know for certain that Jane was born after 1800 and Beniah before 1800. I was unable to find any Ohio marriage record for the couple. Only one Mcknight was living in Belmont County in the 1820 Census. I found no marriage record in Virginia. Source: For all US Government Census is FamilySearch.org.

The US Census for 1840 has Beniah Mcknight living in Washington Twp. Monroe County, Ohio. Beniah is age 40-50; males 0-5 1; 5-10 1; 10-15 2 and females 10-15 2 and Jane age 30-40. Their elder daughter Mary may have died? The Roots Web family tree has the following children for Beniah and Jane. Mary 1822; Benjamin married Rebecca Phillips 1847; Ruth Ann 1824-1902 Tyler Co. WV; Margaret Ann 1828-1888 married John Drake; William Seymour 1832-1909; David Randolph married Hester Ann Drake; Uriah married Nancy Flowers 1861 and Henry. All three of the elder sons fought in the Civil War.

The 1850 US Census have Beniah Mcknight age 52 living in Washington Twp. Monroe and Jane age 45 both born in Virginia. Sons William 21, David 16, Uriah 14 and Henry 6, all born in Ohio. This shows evidence that Beniah was born before 1800 and Jane after 1800 and both were born in Virginia. Most of their children in 1900 are living in Tyler or Pleasants Counties West Virginia and Grandview Twp. Washington County, Ohio.

The 1870 Census has Beniah and Jane living in Marietta Washington County, Ohio were Beniah died in 1879 and Jane died in 1888.

Some family trees has Beniah the son of Benjamin Mcknight, who I believe was his uncle. Eli Mcknight, Benjamin's brother is the father. Eli died in Belmont County, Ohio 1840 a veteran of the Revolutionary War.

1918 Uriah Mcknight of Jefferson, Ohio dies, his death certificate names parents as Beniah Mcknight and Jane Taylor.
