Hugh was born about 1841 in Upper Canada. He was the child of Thomas McKnight and Jane Gillespie. He grew up on his father's farm. In 1861 they were living in Beverly, Wentworth, Canada West and Hugh was working as a laborer on the farm. He had four siblings at this time.[1]
Hugh (age 28), son of Thomas Mcknight & Jane Gillespie, married Elizabeth Clark (age 21) on 23 June 1870 in Scarborough, York, Ontario, Canada. He was working as a farmer in the township of Beverly and a bachelor. Elizabeth was a spinster, residing in Scarboro, Ontario and the daughter of William Clark and Fanny Noble. They were both of Presbyterian faith. The wedding was witnessed by Andrew McKnight of Beverly and Peter Lawson of West Flamborough, Ontario.[2] In 1871, newly married, they were living in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada; farming.[3]
In the 1881 census Hugh (age 40), Farmer, was recorded as married in Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Their faith was C. Presbyterian.[4]

Hugh died (age 44) on 20 May 1884 in Tuckersmith, Huron, Ontario.[5] Hugh was mentioned on a memorial in Egmondville Cemetery, Egmondville, Huron County, Ontario, Canada with a death date of 20 May 1884.[6]
