Biography

Elisabeth was born 26 Aug 1825 at Kildavaig, Kilfinan, Argyll, Scotland to Archibald McLachlan and Elisabeth Lamont. [1] Kildavaig was located near Ardlamont House, and the location can be seen in this 1869 map (surveyed 1863). [2]

According to her obituary, Elisabeth migrated to Canada at 12 years of age, so 1837 or 1838. She married Samuel Screaton in 1844. They had thirteen children, with 9 alive as of 1889: John, Archibald, Samuel, Charles, Herbert, Edmund, James, Elizabeth (Teale), and Lucy.[2] Elisabeth Screaton died 12 Oct 1893 in London, Ontario. Research Notes

Elisabeth's birth year based on her obituary would be 1827, but the 1825 Kilfinan birth record is the best fit. There is some evidence of family connections. Samuel Screaton was a witness at the marriage of Archibald McLachlan (abt.1820-1893). In addition, Oliver Screaton Norsworthy (1867-1939) was given Screaton as a middle name.

If Elisabeth immigrated in the late 1830s, it's unclear who accompanied her. Her mother and several siblings appeared the 1841 Scotland census. No evidence for other siblings arriving until 1840s, although the immigration dates of Hugh and Norman have not been found. No evidence has been found that her father Archibald immigrated to Canada. There is an 1840 death record in Glasgow for Arch. McLachlan, 60 years old, painter. This record could be be Elisabeth's father; however, the age is off by 4 years and there is no evidence for Archibald being a painter.

It is possible that she traveled with the family of her cousin John McLachlan (1805-1899) who immigrated in 1838.
