The 1851 census lists him, his wife Elisabeth, his daughter Mary, and son John in Cadder, Lanarkshire, and lists his occupation as a Chelsea Pensioner born in Callendar, Perth. British Army records have a James MacLachlan born 1798 born in Down, Perth who was in the 2nd Dragoons and was discharged age 42. This is probably the same James. Down probably refers to Doune, which is very close to Callendar?
