Biography of John Rees McLaughlin

Birth

John R McLaughlin was born on June 25, 1907 in Summit Hill, PA to Robert L McLaughlin and Rebecca Edwards. In the 1910 Census, John was 2 years old and living on Rail Road street. His father was working as a coal miner.

1920

In the next census, John is twelve. By this time, his brother Lewis has died from Scarlet Fever in 1911. More children fill the house which is on the south side of East White Street. His 70-year-old grandmother Mary Jane McLaughlin is also living with the family. The family has a boarder as well.

Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company

According to the service record kept by the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company, John was hired as a water boy to begin on 23 June 1923. Apparently he didn't start work because the ending date is the same as the beginning date and it is written "Didn't Start". He would have been 16 years old. However the next entry was for three years later, 30 Oct 1926 for the job of N. Laborer-Ldr in the #6 mine. The rate was listed as .682. This job lasted 29 June 1929. His next job for that company was as a Loader in the #9 Mine which began on 15 Oct 1930 and ended 24 years later on 30 April 1954.

Occupation

John was a heavy truck driver in the food and grocery business.

Death

At the time of his death, John was a widower living in a long-term care facility in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio. He passed away on 30 Aug 1985. He was 78 years old.
