Robert Roy McLaughlin was born on October 23, 1912 in Summit Hill, Carbon County, PA to Robert Logan McLaughlin and Rebecca Edwards. He was their third child, but their first child died at the age of two from scarlet fever.
In the 1920 US Census, Robert Roy is 7 years old. His family lives on the south side of East White St in Summit Hill, a small coal mining community. In the next census in 1930, Robert Roy is 17. He is not working in the coal mine, so he must be attending school.
Robert married Cora Valentine Malick and they had two daughters, Jane and Sally. In the 1940 Census, Robert is working as an ice man for his own ice house in Summit Hill, Carbon, PA.
Robert joined the US Army on 11 April 1944 at the New Cumberland Army Depot and served until 18 Feb 1946 where he exited military service at Fort Indiantown Gap, PA. His papers say that at the time he entered service, he and his family were living in Tamaqua, Schulykill, PA.
