Biography of Susan McLaughlin Katzmire

Birth and Childhood

Susan C McLaughlin was the second child born to Thomas McLaughlin and Mary Jane Demphey Hamilton. Her birth date is listed on her death certificate as January 17, 1877. Susan grew up in the coal mining town of Summit Hill, Carbon County, PA. Her parents were Irish immigrants and her father was a coal miner.

Marriage and Family

On 6 Dec 1894, Susan married Walter Andrew Katzmire, a day laborer in the mines. In the 1900 Census for Summit Hill, Susan and Walter had been married for 5 years and had three children:

• Harold Katzmire 6/12

In the 1910 Census, husband Walter is a coal miner and Susan reports that she has had 6 births, but only 5 alive. The household at this time is as follows:

• Normon Katzmire 12
• Harold Katzmire 11
• Russell Katzmire 8
• Beatrice Katzmire 0

Due to the large break in time between Russell and Beatrice, I am speculating that the baby that died was born somewhere between these two children.

In 1920 Susan is 43 and she and Walter have the following family members living at home with. Note that they have two more children born after the last census.

Death of Husband

On 16 March 1933, Walter Katzmire died and was buried in the Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery in Summit Hill. The 1940 Census shows that daughter Beatrice has married George Maurer and Susan and her youngest son, Melvin are living with Beatrice and George.

In 1945, when she was 68 years old, her son Harold was killed in action in the South Pacific on 29 JAN 1945. [1]

Susan's Death

On 15 May, 1952 Susan fell off a chair and fractured her left hip. She had other complications that led to her death on 28 June 1952. She is buried in the GAR Cemetery in Summit Hill, PA.
