Research and Commentary by Sara Stevens Patton

Little is known about Albert McLaughlin himself, but his estate records provide the only source listing his parents, his siblings and many of his brothers-in-law. Albert was one of twelve children born to John and Bernice ("Burnis") McLaughlin. He was probably born between 1810-1820 and died in 1842. He owned 57 acres in the Town of Porter, Niagara Co, NY which his brother James purchased after his death.

Notes and transcriptions from the Estate Records of Albert McLaughlin in Surrogate Court Records of Niagara County, NY. Box 16 Feb 23, 1883 Top drawer of filing cabinet M-I-Ms in basement of County Courthouse in Lockport, NY

Nine separate documents in the estate records of Albert McLaughlin (d. 1842) list by name the siblings, brothers-in-law, and mother of Albert McLaughlin. The records also give the general location of each sibling and further state that Albert’s father had predeceased him. The documents indicate that Albert died without a widow or children. The following are abstracts of each of those documents containing genealogical information.

The earliest dates on the Albert McLaughlin's estate records regarding his actual death are a July 13, 1842 listing charges for his illness and July 18 for funeral expenses. A statement made in the July 21 petition of his brothers to be appointed administrators of his estate state that Albert died of natural causes "on Monday last" in the town of Porter. The perpetual calendar shows that July 21 1842 was on a Thursday, making "Monday last", July 18 the death date which coincides with the date for funeral expenses.

July 21, 1842: Petition of brothers Ephraim and John McLaughlin to be appointed administrators for Albert McLaughlin’s estate. In addition to clues as to time and place of his death (above), the petition includes a statement that he died intestate, without heirs, widow or father; and that the petitioners were Albert’s brothers.

Olny for making clothes", sheeting, buttons, cambrie, muslin, etc. Owed total of $103.21. [Note: S. Olny is probably Sylvester Olney, Albert's brother-in-law. Sylvester was a master tailor.]
