Birth: Kenneth McDonald McLennan was born on 2 June 1847 at Glenferneigh, near Ebor, NSW, Australia. He was baptised at St Peters, New England on 15 September 1848, parents Alexander McLennan and Mary, settler, abode "Glenfernie"[4][5]
Colonial Conviction
Kenneth was convicted of the crime of cattle stealing and receiving, and received a sentence of 5 years hard labour on the roads. He was admitted on 7 March 1876 to Darlinghurst Gaol, New South Wales.[6] He was described in gaol records as a labourer, Presbyterian, can read and write, auburn hair, blue eyes, 5ft 11½in, 183lbs, two scars on right fore arm, and two large scars on right hip.[7][8]
Marriage
Kenneth McDonald McLennan married Ellege Gray on 21 January 1886 at St Matthews Church of England, South Grafton. The marriage certificate recorded that Kenneth was a bachelor, age 29, a farmer of Caramana, and he was born at Glenferneigh, parents Alexander McLennan, grazier and Mary Matheson. Ellege, a spinster, was working as a domestic, age 21, she was living at Grafton, and she was born at Goulburn, parents Peter Gray, farmer, and Kate Seary. Kenneth and Ellege both signed the register.[9][10] They had children:
Kenneth McDonald McLennan died on 24 October 1907 at Clarence Hospital, South Grafton NSW. He was buried at South Grafton General Cemetery.[11] His grave can be seen on the Find a Grave website.[12]
Obituary, Clarence River Advocate, Tuesday 29 October 1907, page 2:
On Thursday Mr. Kenneth McLennan, of South Grafton, died at Clarence Hospital from pneumonia, at the age of 60, after a few days' illness. Deceased was a native of Guy Fawkes, and was a son of the late Mr. Alex. McLennan. He leaves a widow and family of ten (six sons and four daughters), the eldest being about 20 years of age. He also leaves a large number of relatives in the district.[13]
