Biography

James McMahon was born in Belfast, Ireland, in 1824. He emigrated to the United States with his family at the age of 6. The family settled in Fall River, Massachusetts. He became a merchant there. He married and fathered three children:

Hugh, who died young in New York; James, who married but was childless; and John, who ran away from home at the age of 16 to serve as a drummer boy in the Civil War. John married Johanna ____. They were childless. He changed his name to Cummings and moved to Elkhorn, Wisconsin.

James had one brother, Edward. Edward had a son, John, who was a lawyer in New York City.

James's wife presumably died young. James married for a second time, to Mary Ann Carney (1837-1908), in Watertown, Wisconsin, in 1854. They had seven children together.

James died in 1874, leaving his wife with seven children of her own and three stepchildren.

Father of Sarah McMahon Flanagan.
