hopefully last option - how John is listed in his own household with a Hristorina McMahon and child Clarence. This seems the most likely prospect, putting Louisa as wife of James. How does that sound?

One more idea - there is a Louisa McMahan listed in the 1901 census but she could go with either James or John, who are both in that household.
