Biography

William Daniel McMahon was the father of Australian Prime Minister William McMahon.

He was born in Sydney to Irish-born carriier and business man James McMahon and his wife Mary Coyle in 1879. He qualifed and worked as a solicitor at Redfern. He married Mary Ann Walder in 1903 and they had five children. She died when the youngest child was just six years old, and William followed six years later. The family was very well connected - one of Mary's brother was Sir Samuel Robert Walder (b 8/10/1879 d 24/11/1946) businessman, Lord Mayor of Sydney (1932) and member of the Legislative Council.
