Robert E. McMillan, 85, of 47 Mowry St., a teacher in Providence high schools, and track and hockey coach at Central High School for 40 years before before retiring in 1962, died yesterday at the Overlook Nursing Home after a four-month illness. He was the husband of Claire M. (McKenna) McMillan.
Born in Fall River, a son of the late Daniel and Clementine (Carmichael) McMillan, he lived in Harrisville for eight years. He previously lived in Providence for 50 years.
Mr. McMillan was a World War II Army veteran with the rank of captain. He was a graduate of Holy Cross College in 1924, and received a master's degree from Brown University. He had attended Columbia University.
He was a military aide to former Gov. Theodore Francis Green. He was awarded the Order of the Purple Knight of the Holy Cross.
Besides his wife he leaves three sons, Robert J. and John D. McMillan, both of North Providence, and Joseph D. McMillan of Harrisville; a daughter, Mrs. Claire A. Howe of Pascoag; a brother, Everett McMillan of Bristol; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Grimes of South Yarmouth, Mass., Mrs. Gertrude Tierney of East Haven, Conn., and seven grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Wednesday at 9 a.m. from the J.F. Skeffington Chapel, 925 Chalkstone Ave., Providence, with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Pius Church, Eaton Street, Providence, at 10. Burial will be in St. Ann's Cemetery, Cranston.
