Biography

Mary had married by the time the family returned to Easdale and in the 1871 census is a visitor, along with her three sons David 5, Donald 2 and John 3 months old. It is possible that Mary had traveled to Teasdale specifically to have her baby John there. Mary's sister Sarah, who married Duncan Macdonald, did the same thing with her first two children.

Her husband John meanwhile was at 65, Taylor Street,Glasgow Central [1]

The next census, 1881 the family are all together at 10, Garden Street, City Glasgow, Blackfriars Their oldest child, David, 15 is already working as a salesman. The girls are Mary 8, Annabella 6 and Elizabeth 4. The two other boys, Donald and John are still in Easdale [2] where they are at school.

Mary's death from pulmonary phthisis (TB) , age 38, in 1883 caused considerable changes take place in the family. Her and John's two sons who had been in Easdale, Donald and John stay on in Easdale with their grandparents Donald and Mary and in the 1891 census they have become slate quarriers. [3]
