Dr. Samuel J. McMillan, a skilful and popular dentist of Somerset, Pa., is a
native of Addison township, Somerset County. He is a son of Jehu and Mary A.
(Ream) McMillan, and is descended from one of the early settled families of this
section of the State, his paternal grandfather, John K. McMillan, having spent
his seventy-five years of earthly life in the southern part of Somerset County.......
.....Samuel J. McMillan obtained his elementary education in the schools of
Listonburg, Pa., and afterward attended the college at Harlem Springs, Ohio.
Returning home, he learned the trade of a leather currier, which he followed for
twelve consecutive years, and then gave it up to turn his whole attention to the
study of dentistry, in which he had long been interested. Entering the
University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, he was graduated with the class of
1884, and for a brief time practiced dentistry in that city. Going then to
Confluence, Somerset County, he was there associated with Dr. Tannehill a few
months. In the latter part of the year 1884 Dr. McMillan opened an office in
Somerset, where by his evident skill and thorough knowledge of his profession he
has won the confidence and esteem of the people, and built up a large and
lucrative practice.
He is prominently identified with several fraternal organizations, being a
member and a Past Master of Somerset Lodge, No, 358, F. & A. M.; a member of the
Somerset Lodge, I.O.O.F.; a member of Hiawatha Lodge, of Addison, and a Past
Grand of that lodge; and also a member of the Golden Eagle Lodge, of Somerset.
He is active in religious circles and a worthy member of the Christian church.
Dr. McMillan was married April 21, 1880, to Mary C., daughter of the Hon.
Charles Kantner, of Virginia. They have two children; namely, Lena B. and
Eunice K.
