Family lore is that he left home in Texas at age 9 and made it to St. Louis. While in St. Louis, a family from Greene County, IL took him in and took him back to Greene County, IL.

In the 1850 US Federal Census, there is a group of three McNEIL children, including a William McNEIL, aged 9, (b. ~ 1842), in Carondelet , St. Louis, MO. It appears to be an Orphanage.
