Note
Note: Basil Gerard McNamara was the tenth and youngest child of Patrick and Ellen McNamara. He was born on July 8, 1913 at 12:05 A.M. at 510 Windemere Blvd. in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Rev. Joseph Coleman baptized him at St. Mary's Church in Toronto, Aug. 3, 1913. Sponsors were James King and Mrs. Eliz. King.
The family moved to Buffalo, N.Y. on Nov. 27, 1915 and he attended Holy Angel's Grade School and Hutchinson Central High School. For a time he worked for the old IRC (International Rail Company) as astreet car driver and a bus driver.
In February of 1940 he was called to service in the United States Army for one year. However, on December 7, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and W.W. ll was declared. Gerry's hitch in a peacetime army was extended to a total of five years and ten months in the Pacific Theatre of War.
Upon returning home from service, he was employed by the old Bell Aircraft Company (now Bell Aerospace Co.) for more than twenty five years. He retired on disability in the early 1970's.
Gerry was a great promoter of programs for youth. In the late 1930's he asked for and got permission from Father Klauder, Pastor of St. John's Church, to start a Catholic Youth Organization in the parish. Time after time the youths, both boys and girls, won championships for baseball, basketball, and volleyball under his and his assistant's directions. He only gave up working with the youth after major surgery made him a semi-invalid in 1967. Gerry's surgery was for a non-malignant brain tumor.
On August 11, 1987 he suffered a heart attack and died on August 20, 1987 in St. Francis Hospital, Buffalo, N.Y. Twenty three of the twenty six of his nieces and nephews from all over the country attended his funeral. Thus a perfect testimony of the love they all had for this special uncle.
Buried in Mt Olivet, Lot # 91, Grave #3, Section D. Called by the name Gerry.
