Canberra Times, Monday 22 August 1949:
FIVE KILLED IN CRASH OF CAR NEAR MOREE
TAMWORTH, Sunday.
Five persons were killed and one injured in a car smash on Gwydir Highway, 11 miles east from Moree, early this morning.
Those killed were: Daniel Alexander Daley, 33, of Springfield, Biniguy; Leslie McNamara, 36, farmer, of Riverside, Pallamallawa, Gwendoline Dorothea Godber, 26, nursing sister, of the Moree District Hospital; Audrey Archibald, 36, nursing sister, of the Moree Hospital; and Mrs John Sutton, wife of the only survivor.
The injured man was John Sutton. He was admitted to the Moree District Hospital in a serious condition.
The car, which was believed to have been driven by Daley, was travelling from Gravesend toward Moree when the accident occurred. The car failed to negotiate a turn in the road. It travelled for about 400 yards in loose gravel before striking a tree, coming to a standstill at right-angles to the roadway.
Daley was found lying dead on the ground on the driver's side of the car.
The only survivor, Sutton, was found in the front seat of the car, fully conscious.
Leslie McNamara was the holder of the Australian open camp draft championship, for which he won the gold cup at Toowoomba this year.
