On May 25, 2019, descendents of Alexander and Mary, from 12 states, formally dedicated the grave marker set in May of 2018 on the old McPherson homestead in Sinking Creek Valley, Virginia. The dedication was complete with bagpipe music, scriptures, reading of Robt Burn’s “Highlands“ poem, laying of the tartan, ringing of the death bell, story of the dead and laying of the flowers. A McPherson Sunday service was held on May 26th celebrating the life and history of Alexander and the McPherson Clan in Gravel Hill Church, which was the church founded by Alexander’s son Jacob which followed the original church in the county, the old log church that was started by Alexander himselF. Richard N McPherson's 5th great grandfather Sinking Creek Valley is located in Craig County, Virginia. Craig County is in the southwestern part of the state and borders West Virginia. In colonial Virginia the area was first part of Orange County. As settlers moved across the Blue Ridge Mountains the area became part of Augusta County. In 1770 the area was in Fincastle County, but in 1772 it was part in Botetourt County and part in Montgomery County. In 1806 the Montgomery County part of lower Sinking Creek Valley and some from Botetourt County was transferred to Giles County. In 1851 the valley became part of the newly formed Craig County where it is located today. Craig County was erected in 1851 from Botetourt and Roanoke, and borders on the State of West Virginia, from which it is separated by the Alleghany Mountains. Alleghany bounds it on the north, Roanoke, Montgomery and Giles on the south, and Botetourt on the east. Buried on his former property. Although the house is gone from Craig County, there are plans for it to be live again. This log house has a long history. The 1936 Works Progress Administration (WPA) Craig County Historical Inventory, and 70 year Updates, compiled and printed by Clyde and Nathalie Givens, as a 2007 project of the Craig County Historical Society, states that the house was built about 1780. This project was edited and annotated by Jane Johnston, who furnished additional information on the McPherson family and the Gravel Hill Christian Church. The house was a small two-story log structure, which had been weather boarded over and had additions to it over the years. Although the WPA Inventory lists Jacob McPherson as the original owner, it’s believed that the house originally belonged to his father, Alexander McPherson and his wife, Mary. Jacob was born in 1781 and died in 1857. The book “Genealogy of the Lugar Family” by Twila Lugar Graves, says Jacob was given 200 acres of land on Sinking Creek in 1800 by his father. He married Phoebe Lugar in 1802. Jacob was a constable of Giles (now Craig) County in 1807. He gave land for a school and built the McPherson schoolhouse just below the log house. The house is of historical significance because it was used as a house of worship before any church building was erected in the Sinking Creek Valley. Jacob is also believed to have been the first elder of the church, which was first known as the Antioch and was later changed to Gravel Hill Christian Church. The house had numerous owners over the years. Hazel Beeler and Michael Kuric, nearby neighbors of the property, said that the most recent owner was a Mr. Hopkins, a former professor at VA Tech. The house was vacant for a number of years and had been vandalized. It’s believed that Mr. Hopkins decided to sell the logs and other salvageable materials in the house instead of letting it deteriorate further. The house was sold to Antique Cabins and Barns, whose office is in Lewisburg, W. Va. This company specializes in the recovery and restoration of 19th century hand-hewn log and timber frame structures. Business founder and CEO Marke Bowe explained that the his company works all over the United States and part of Canada. Their work includes the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, Patrick Henry Memorial Cabin, Monticello Visitors Center and numerous smaller structures. The men are very proud of their work on the WV State Museum in Charleston. The company’s website, antiquecabinsandbarns.com, shows a number of these restored buildings, as well as some of the buildings in their inventory, for sale. Bowe was on the site in Craig County recently, along with a number of his employees, working to take the house down. They had already done some clearing around the house and had removed the siding. The porch had also been removed. The metal roof was being torn off. Each log, as well as the rafters, was tagged with a number to help in re-assembling the house. The oak logs in the house were in remarkably good condition. The largest logs were 26 feet long and were 14 ½ inches high and 6 or 7-inches thick. All the useable materials in the house were were loaded onto trucks and taken to the company’s restoration facility North of White Sulphur Springs. The logs will be cleaned and treated for any insects before being re-assembled in Jonesboro, Tenn., for use as a guest house. There are many emotions involved when looking at an old home such as the McPherson house. There is amazement at how the heavy logs were lifted into place without the benefit of large equipment, how the workers used their muscles and probably some horses to pull the logs up and into position. There’s admiration for the workmanship involved in hewing out the logs, notching them and fitting them so that they have held together for over 200 years. There’s respect for the hard-working men and women who had the knowledge and the desire to build this house, using the materials they had, without the benefit of a nearby building supply store. There’s also some sadness at seeing another of the old homes being torn down. However, a number of the old homes have been left to fall down and that is much sadder. There’s appreciation for the owner’s decision to preserve the materials in the house. There’s also gladness that this house will be reconstructed and will be used and enjoyed for many more years. Bowe has promised to share photos of the house when it’s rebuilt, and we look forward to seeing them.Logs from the former Jacob McPherson cabin were carefully numbered before being taken down and transported to West Virginia. 1746, Alexander McPherson, Junior, along with his brothers John and Richard, witnessed the Will of Archibald, Johnson of Charles County 1767 Alexander McPherson, married Mary Beall.[1] He married around 1767; his eldest child was born in 1769 (per Wikitree) On 12 Dec 1776 in Bedford, Virginia Alexander McPherson held 178 acres on Stone Wall Creek 1778 Received Disbursement from John Evans Estate Aug 17, 1780 Land Deed - Stone Wall Creek, Bedford, Virginia - Alexander and wife Mary of Botetourt, deeded the entire 378 acres which adjoined Richard McPherson's land to David Ross. Nov. 1741 - Charles Co., Md. Court. The Charles Co. Court of Nov. 1743 sets forth the final account and distribution, dated Nov. 1741, for the estate of Daniel Macpherson by Ignatius Tenneson and Elizabeth his wife, executrix. The account shows that the total estate assets were 90/1/6, that disbursements had been made amounting to 82/19/2, leaving a balance of 7/2/4 to be disposed of according to law and Daniel's will. The sureties for Elizabeth's executorships were Alexander Macpherson, Sr., and William Macpherson, Jr., both of Charles Co. Source: Charles Co., Md. Court and Land Records, Liber 39, p. 668.

 Based on Daniel’s Will we can conclude that Elizabeth Nevitt was Daniel’s wife before he died and then she shortly thereafter remarried to Ignatious Tennison (Ignatious’s will would be helpful or Elizabeth’s if she died after him).

 Elizabeth’s Mother Mary Montgomery remarried as well she was first married to Richard Nevitt (it would be helpful to have Richard’s will) then Edmond Macatee: MACATEE, EDMOND, Charles Co. 15 Sep, 1764 31 Oct,. 1764 Wife Mary Macatee and dau, Agness Macatee., the plantation I now dwell on and after their decease to son Thomas Macatee. Hello Richard -- kudos for your work with the gathering to celebrate memorials to these ancestors!: https://www.facebook.com/pg/McPhersonGathering2019/posts/

I work on Bealls and am trying to sort out his wife Mary Beall's connections, so redid the bios of both with inline citations. Now we need some stronger sources than geni and find-a-grave!

McPherson-1183 and McPherson-345 appear to represent the same person because: same first name, last name, birth year/location, death year.
